What are the most common reasons an SSD claim is denied?

On Behalf of | Aug 29, 2025 | Social Security Disability

Applying for Social Security Disability (SSD) benefits can feel overwhelming, especially when approval is not guaranteed. Many applicants face denials, sometimes for reasons they could have avoided. Understanding the most common causes helps applicants prepare stronger claims.

Lack of medical evidence

One of the leading reasons for SSD denials is insufficient medical documentation. The Social Security Administration (SSA) requires clear, consistent records that detail the diagnosis, treatment, and limitations caused by the condition. Without thorough records from doctors, hospitals, or specialists, applicants fail to prove their disability.

Earning too much income

SSD benefits serve individuals who cannot work because of a disability. If an applicant earns more than the SSA’s substantial gainful activity (SGA) limit, the SSA denies the claim. Even part-time work can cause a denial if income exceeds the threshold.

Condition not meeting SSA criteria

The SSA uses strict medical criteria for qualifying conditions. A diagnosis alone does not qualify an applicant. The impairment must meet the specific severity requirements in the SSA’s “Blue Book” or clearly prevent substantial work. If the SSA decides the condition lacks the required severity, the claim fails.

Failure to follow treatment plans

If an applicant ignores prescribed treatments without a valid reason, the SSA may decide the condition could improve with proper care. This often leads to a denial because the SSA cannot fully assess the disability without consistent treatment records.

Missing deadlines or incomplete forms

The SSD process involves strict timelines and detailed paperwork. Missing filing deadlines, leaving out required information, or ignoring SSA requests results in an automatic denial.

Moving forward with confidence

A denial can feel discouraging, but it does not always end the process. By preparing thoroughly, gathering complete medical records, and following SSA requirements, applicants can strengthen their chances of receiving the benefits they need.
