Working while on SSDI benefits

On Behalf of | Aug 15, 2024 | Social Security Disability

If you’re receiving Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) in Pennsylvania and considering work, you may question how employment affects your benefits. Some rules allow SSDI recipients to work under certain conditions while continuing to receive financial support.

Understand the trial work period

The SSA offers a trial work period (TWP) that lets you test out your ability to work for at least nine months without losing your benefits. During this period, you can receive your full SSDI benefits no matter how much you earn, but you must continue to report your work activity and the fact that you still have a disabling impairment.

Know the income limits

After the trial work period, you enter the extended period of eligibility (EPE). For the next 36 months, you can still receive benefits for any month your earnings aren’t considered “substantial.”

In 2024, the SSA considers earnings over $1,550 monthly (or $2,590 if you’re blind) as substantial. You can still receive your full SSDI benefits if your earnings fall below this threshold.

Report your earnings

Make sure to report your work and earnings to the SSA. They need to know about any changes in your work activity, as this can affect your benefits. Proper reporting helps you avoid getting overpayments and the need for difficult repayments.

Consider impairment-related work expenses

If working requires you to incur certain expenses related to your disability, the SSA may deduct these from your reported earnings. These expenses can include transportation costs, medical devices, or services that help you work. Reporting these can help keep your earnings within the non-substantial range.

Seek assistance if needed

If you need help with how to proceed, consider seeking guidance from a program that helps SSDI recipients understand employment impacts on benefits. They provide valuable information and support, ensuring you make informed decisions about your work and benefits.

By understanding the process, you can make a more informed decision about working while receiving SSDI in Pennsylvania. This can help you manage your health and financial stability.
